Wow, what a week! After an early start for all students, the English and Germans arrived on Saturday and were welcomed by their French hosts and the Spaniards arrived on Sunday.
On Monday we arrived at school at 8am and had a "getting to know you" session in the school gym - much hilarity ensued and we were soon recognising faces. After lunch we had a visit to a French rubbish centre where we saw how normal household rubbish is processed, buried and burnt.
On Tuesday, we spent the day at the regional capital city of Reims. We were split into two groups - one group explored the city whilst the other group visited a recycling centre to learn how much of the plastic, paper, glass and metal is sorted by hand and then bundled and sold to other plants where it is dealt with in an appropriate manner. At lunchtime, both groups convened in a local park for a picnic, followed by a litter clean - although the park was kept very clean by the local council, there was still plenty of rubbish to pick up!
Wednesday at school finishes at lunchtime so we spent the morning in workshops. Different groups of mixed students were responsible for creating a "rubbish" monument, creating crafts from recycled plastic bottles, putting together a play, creating a circus show, creating posters to show parents and the whole school, and producing reports (including an interview with local politicians). In the afternoon, students spent free time with their host families.
On Thursday, students went to a nature reserve in the morning and learnt how plastic waste is affecting farming, fishing, leisure and nature. After lunch, we visited a local wolf park where we learnt how the wolves were being looked after - there was also an amazing trampoline park which tired us all out.
Friday morning came and we had four hours to complete our workshops ready for the final show. The final show was given to other students and teachers from the school at 4pm, and then the grand finale was shown to host families and other students at 6pm. This was followed by a celebration banquet and disco before the emotional goodbyes.
What a week, Vouziers!! Thank you so much for hosting us, and we look forward to our next trip to Germany in May 2020.
